Virginia Beach’s Evan Beck reaches quarterfinals in match play at VSGA Amateur – The Virginian-Pilot


GOLF

No. 2 seed Evan Beck of Virginia Beach advanced to the quarter-finals in VSGA Amateur Championship match play with a pair of wins Wednesday at Cedar Point Club in Suffolk.

Beck passed two junior golfers, beating Chase Nevins of Trump National (Washington) 5 and 3 and Logan Reilly of Loudoun Golf & Country Club 5 and 4.

No. 1 seed Connor Creasy of the University of Georgia lost to No. 16 seed Jordan Utley 1-up on the 18th hole in the round of 16.

Other golfers reaching the quarter-finals included No. 3 seed Carlo Pizzano, No. 4 Grayson Wood, No. 6 Ross Funderburke, No. 8 Isaac Simmons, No. 12 Bryce Corbett and No. 23 Garrett Kuhla.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place today, with the 36-hole championship match scheduled for Friday morning.

BASEBALL

First baseman Matt Coutney was among four Old Dominion players to make the All-Virginia Sports Information Directors team.

Coutney and pitcher Blake Morgan were on the first team, while receiver Brock Gagliardi and outfielder Andy Garriola are on the second team.

Coutney made four All-America teams this postseason, tying the school record for most in a season. Kyle Battle (2021), Anthony Shawler (2007) and Tim Hummel (2000) also made four All-America teams.

Christopher Newport’s baseball team has placed five players on the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Team.

First baseman Justin Bowers and second baseman/relief pitcher Daniel Elliott earned first-team honors, while outfielder Conner Clark, starting pitcher Jay Cassady and relief pitcher Kyle Lewis were among of the second team.

Clark and Cassady both won all-state recognition for the second time.

Mason Maners hit a two-run brace to spark a four-run fourth inning that led the Morehead City Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the Peninsula Pilots in a Coastal Plain League game on Tuesday night in Morehead City , North Carolina.

McGwire Tuffy and Dylan Rogers each produced a run for the Marlins (19-6-0).

The Pilots (11-13-0) scored their runs on Jack Dragum’s RBI field in the first and a Morehead City error in the fourth.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Brendan Robinson, an athlete from St. Paul VI Catholic High School (Chantilly), announced on Twitter that he had committed to play football at William & Mary.

The dual-sport star (5-11, 170) played cornerback, wide receiver and running back on the football team and was a point guard on the basketball team.

He was twice selected in the first team of all football conferences.

COLLEGE LACROSSE

Christopher Newport’s men’s lacrosse team earned all-state honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Max Wayne was named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the second player in Virginia history to do so.

Warner Cabaniss was Rookie of the Year and Mikey Thompson was Coach of the Year.

Joining Wayne and Cabaniss on the All-State First Team were Coby Auslander, Andrew Cook, Phoenix Hines, Campbell Pozin, Dylan Rice and Burke Widhelm. Zac Hanway was part of the second team.

College athletics

Arianna DeBoer and Emily Ervin represented the William & Mary women’s track and field team last weekend at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships at the University of Oregon.

DeBoer placed sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:03.87.

Ervin finished fifth in the first round of the 400 meters with a time of 55.18.
